Through numerical analysis, a joint research group led by Professor Satoshi Iwamoto and Visiting Associate Professor Yasutomo Ota, both members of this NanoQuine, has discovered a method to realize a broadband topological photonic crystal waveguide that can operate in a wavelength band 1,000 times wider than conventional ones by using magneto-optical materials with near-zero dielectric constant. This achievement paves the way for the realization of future high-density and high-efficiency photonic integrated circuits utilizing topology, such as unidirectional waveguides. The joint research group includes Professor Iwamoto, Visiting Associate Professor Ota, Tinaji Liu, Assistant Professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (at the time of the research), and Principal Researcher Nobukiyo Kobayashi and Senior Researcher Kenji Ikeda of the Electromagnetic Materials Research Institute. The paper was published in the online edition of ACS Photonics on April 27.
