A joint research group led by Professor Masaaki Tanaka and Professor Takuji Takahashi fabricated a nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic semiconductor heterojunction and found that the sign of the electrical resistance change changes when the direction of the magnetic field changes, and that the change rate shows a huge odd-parity magnetoresistance(OMR) as large as 27%. In addition to clarifying the effects of “symmetry breaking” on the properties and functions of materials, they also confirmed that this OMR can be controlled by an external magnetic field. This achievement is expected to be applied to next-generation spintronics and quantum devices. The paper was published in the British scientific journal Nature Communications on November 9.
