Professor Yasuhiko Arakawa was selected as the 2023 Person of Cultural Merit for his achievements from the theoretical proposal to the practical application of quantum dots, which confine electrons in three dimensions. Professor Arakawa has been engaged in research on optical devices since joining the Institute of Industrial Science of the University of Tokyo as a lecturer in 1980. In 1982, he and Professor Hiroyuki Sakaki jointly published a paper on the theoretical proposal of quantum dots and their laser application. Since then, he has been engaged in basic research on quantum dots and their practical applications.
