Associate Professor Masahiro Nomura (Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology) and his colleagues have discovered a new fourth heat dissipation mechanism. Using surface phonon polaritons, which are a mixture of light and phonons, they have succeeded in doubling the thermal conductivity of silicon nitride thin films. These results were published in the electronic edition of the American scientific journal Science Advances on 1 October.
