Professor Hidetoshi Katori will receive the Honda Prize 2022, the Honda Foundation announced on Friday, September 30. The prize, established in 1980, is Japan’s first international prize in the field of science and technology, and one is awarded annually. In 2001, Professor Katori invented an optical lattice clock that uses a large number of atoms captured in an optical lattice to create a high-precision standard time, and has now achieved ultra-high precision of only 1 second in 30 billion years. He has also made use of this ultra-high precision measurement to develop relativistic geodesy and other applications. The award ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 17 at the Imperial Hotel in Hibiya, Tokyo.
