Associate Professor Masahiro Nomura (Institute of Industrial Science) was awarded the 16th Japan Society for the Promotion of Science(JSPS) Prize on Tuesday 18 February. The reason for the award is “Heat flow control using phononic nanostructures and its application to environmental power generation”. The award was given for his success in controlling heat conduction using interference based on the wave nature of heat using nanostructures, and for proposing and demonstrating that heat can be given directionality by using ballistic properties that make heat, which normally diffuses without directionality, manifest at the nanoscale. The award ceremony, which took place at the Japan Academy in Ueno, was attended by Prince and Princess Akishino, who offered words of encouragement to the award winners.
