Prof. Yasuhiko Arakawa and his colleagues, together with the Photonics Electronics Technology Research Association (PETRA) and QD Laser (President: Mitsuru Sugawara), have succeeded for the first time in room temperature operation of a quantum dot laser coupled to a silicon waveguide. Using the evanescent effect, a quantum dot laser fused directly onto a silicon waveguide has achieved optical coupling with a high efficiency of 70%, and operation at temperatures up to 115°C has been confirmed. The new quantum dot laser is expected to be used in silicon photonics applications. This paper was published in APEX on 2 August.
